SYNOPSIS

"This is the dream i had last night. I shot it in order to watch it again."

Before filming a dream you first would have to get into it: How is it possible to get into a dream? If someone ever ended up in a dream he probably has no genuine proof of it. Dreams have this particularity that they fade away, that is, if they are not forgotten straight away. But what if someone not only found himself in a dream but also had the opportunity to film it in order to contemplate it again? What if someone had the power to build up, shape and organise his dreams? This piece is the first of a series of short-movies filmed from the inside, from the other side of the camera. To put it another way, this is a piece of a series of dreams filmed from an actual dream.

DIRECTOR

While his first degree is in communication engineering, Daniel Abad has also graduated with first honours from the ECAM – Madrid’s school of cinema. Combining these two areas of knowledge along with his fine arts studies, Daniel’s professional ambitions are now articulated around photography and directing: his commitment has been such that his work as a cinematographer for the short-movie “A Tiempo” has won the 2010 Spanish National Kodak award. Since he has moved to Madrid, Spain, in 2007, Daniel has been involved in several movie projects such as Maktub (Paco Arango, 2009), The Cold Light of Day (Mabrouk El Mechri, 2011) or Coloquio en la Residencia (Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón, 2010) and he is now editing a documentary filmed in Balmandir, one of Kathmandú (Nepal) numerous orphanages.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Diary of Dreams is an ambitious project aiming to articulate at a visual level the contemplative state into which one might find himself whilst dreaming. Thus, this work is not about the generally admitted representation of a dream but rather about everything that is encapsulated in the imagery of the subconscious. In other words, It has no pretence of depicting a dream and its content for it concentrates on the process of representation. A piece of Diary of Dreams is by no means a premeditated scheme, it is an organic process which goal is to turn a work of visual arts into what is meant to be a dream. While finding out about processes in any situation might be the key to dream-making, there is no pre-established way of doing so.
